Sonic City

Curated By SAVAGES

12 & 13 NOVEMBER 2016

SAVAGES

Sunday

© Savages

Savages played at De Kreun in 2013, when this all-female four-piece was invited by Beak> . Savages is now one of the best live bands out there, known for their concerts where front woman Jehnny Beth spends parts of the show crowdwalking the audience.
Savages indoor at Sonic City will be epic, it might be the last time you see this band in a small indoor venue. All love for this one.

KATE TEMPEST

Saturday

Kate Tempest is a musician, rapper, a poet. She toured the spoken-word circuit, won a Ted Hughes award for her epic narrative poem ‘Brand New Ancients’ before releasing her debut album ‘Everybody Down’ (Big Dada Records). ‘’As Tempest’s gorgeous streams of words flow out, they conjure a story so vivid it’s as if you had a state-of-the-art Blu-Ray played stuffed in your brain, projecting image after image that sears itself into your consciousness.’’ Well, if even the New York Times is saying it...

TORTOISE

Saturday

© Tortoise

Tortoise revolutionized American indie rock in the mid-'90s by playing down tried-and-true punk and rock & roll influences, emphasizing instead the incorporation of a variety of left-field music genres from the previous 20 years, including Krautrock, dub, avant-garde jazz, classical minimalism, ambient and space music. (Allmusic) Back with the album 'The Catastrophist'.

SUUNS

Saturday

SUUNS must be making ‘musicians-music’, as year after year they seem to show up in the ‘wanted’ list of our Sonic City curators. The band curated our festival in 2012, then were invited again last year (with Jerusalem in my Heart) and they will be back in November with the new album ‘Hold/Still’. Http://Suuns Bandcamp/

BEAK>

Sunday

© Beak

Third time this band from Bristol will play Sonic City Festival. Originally invited by SUUNS in 2012, they curated Sonic City in 2013 (and invited Savages!). Ever since then, they've been popping up in every curator's 'wish-list'. We are happy to have Beak> play again at De Kreun. Watch them play at Sonic City '12 in the video link below!. Check Beak's Bandcamp

MOTORAMA

Sunday

It’s quite impossible to listen to Motorama and not think of Joy Division or Interpol. Their music, floating somewhere inbetween new-wave and pop, is hailing from Rostov-On-Don in Russia. Motorama brings some ColdWave to the Sonic City stage. This is the first Russian band to play Sonic City. Ideal tunes for cold November.

MYKKI BLANCO

Saturday

Mykki Blanco is a performance art-charachter created by Michael David Quattlebaum: American rapper, poet and activist.' Blanco’s work has consistently been centered around identity and the struggles of claiming her own.''A lot of people want musicians to have one image. If I had chosen to do that in a gimmicky way, it may have made things easier at first, but I would’ve lost out in the end because I would be a prisoner of a persona.' (Pitchfork) ( http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20002-mykki-blanco-gay-dog-food/)

DUKE GARWOOD

Saturday

Duke Garwood is a London-based multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. He's released five studio albums, he played guitar on The Orb's single 'Perpetual Dawn', appeared on the first two albums of 'Archie Bronson Outfit', played guitar on Mark Lanegan's album 'Blues Funeral' and clarinet on Savages' 'Silence Yourself'.

INGA COPELAND

Saturday

Following her work with Dean Blunt and Hype Williams, Inga Copeland has put out several solo releases. Producing by herself and with several collaborators including Scratcha DVA, John T. Gast, Martyn and Actress, her self-released records have seen her build on the initial foundations of the lo-fi and discordant qualities of her earliest works.
Last year’s EP “RELAXIN’ with Lolina”, the first offering under Lolina moniker, proposed further developments to the previous work with digital production, minimalist composition and repetitive vocal arrangements. Lolina’s follow-up album “Live in Paris”, which is Inga Copeland’s second solo full-length, continues this attempt to discover possibilities for experimentation within the adopted limitations of electronic music.

KITE BASE

Sunday

Kite Base is an electronic duo featuring Ayse Hassan and Kendra Frost. Comprised of two bass guitars, vocals and beats with an industrial edge; blending the craft of pop with organic noise. The name is based on one of the main starting points found in origami, a Kite Base is an opening move made with simple folds to generate a firm and fertile foundation for creativity. It can become whatever you want it to be- simple or complex- based on the imagination of the creator, inspiration and chance.

A DEAD FOREST INDEX

Sunday

A Dead Forest Index, comprised of brothers Adam Sherry and Sam Sherry crafts ethereal and intensely intimate compositions that defy trends and labelling, instead shaping an aural experience as organic as it is unpredictable. Forsaking instrumental complexity in favour of richly dense vocals and an otherwise minimal palette, the band evokes heaviness with the atmosphere they create rather than through blunt force.

JOHNNY HOSTILE

Sunday

Johnny Hostile is Savages’ producer, is part of John and Jehn (lo-fi project with Jehnny Beth) and fellow founder of Pop Noire Records (with Jehnny Beth from Savages).
Sonic City Sunday is all about Pop Noire.

JESSY LANZA

Saturday

Jessy Lanza is a Canadian electronic songwriter that brings pop music laced with funk, soul, R&B and haunting high-register vocals. Her LP ‘Oh No’ was released on Hyperdub in 2016. Pitchfork called Oh No ‘’ a gorgeous and deadly pop music manifesto, full of pent-up nervous energy set to release’’.

DON TEEL CURTIS

Sunday

Don Teel Curtis’ music is something like long lost recordings from the board on an open mic night, or possibly standing between two bands sound checking. Many of the songs are likely to have multi-tracked guitars and vocals and some have been written for his mothers on mother’s day. True Sonic City discovery, this one.
